Caution
Bold reference numbers in this section identify parts shown in this exploded view diagram. These parts do not appear in the figures near the text.
Rear suspension
The rear suspension is managed by a fully adjustable hydraulic shock absorber (1) with progressive actuation.
This system consists of a top rocker (8), an adjustable linkage (19) secured to swingarm and of a hydraulic knob for spring preload adjustment.
The swingarm is linked to frame and engine with pivot points for maximum stiffness.
See Sect. D 4, Adjusting the rear shock absorber (1100S) for rear shock absorber adjustments.
Removing the rear shock absorber
To remove rear shock absorber from swingarm and top rocker, remove rubber plugs (20) and loosen upper (12) and lower (17) screws.
When the lower screw (17) is removed, the lower ball joint (3) of the linkage (19) is released from the swingarm. Collect the threaded bush (18) and the bushes (7) placed at the sides of the lower linkage ball joint.
Overhauling the rear shock absorber
Caution
Please contact an authorised Öhlins Service Centre in case of problems to the monoshock.
Removing the rear suspension rocker arm
Remove the shock absorber top from the rocker as described in "Removing the rear shock absorber" under this section.
Unscrew the screw (11) and disconnect linkage (19) from rocker arm (8). Keep the bushes (7) at the sides of the ball joint (5).
Check for play in the needle roller bearings (9) placed inside the rocker arm (8) before taking the rocker arm off the frame.
Push and pull rocker arm rear end in all directions.
Change bearings if you determine excessive play.
To remove the rocker arm (8) from the frame, undo the nut (15) and remove the spacer (16).
Unscrew the retaining screw (14) and remove the complete rocker arm (8) from the frame.
Overhauling the rear suspension rocker arm
Disassembling the rear suspension rocker arm
Rocker motion is ensured through roller bearings (9) working onto an inner spacer (13). Two seal rings (10) fitted at the ends keep the lubrication oil into the needle roller cages.
Remove the inner spacer (13) first and then the oil seals and the needle roller bearings using a drift with an outer diameter of Ø 21.6 mm.
Caution
Do not damage the bearing seats on the rocker arm while driving out the bearings. Do not reuse the oil seals (10) or the needle roller bearings (9) after removal.
Reassembling the rear suspension rocker arm
Fit a new needle roller bearing (9) to the drift no. 88713.1071 and grease the seat in the rocker arm with the specified grease.
Place the rocker arm on an adequate support and push the drift fully home into the rocker arm to drive the bearing into place.
Caution
Fit the bearing squarely in the hole: use a press in case of jams.

Fit a new seal (10) on the drift with the metal side facing outwards. Drive it into firm contact with the needle roller bearing (9) fitted previously.
Repeat the above procedure for the other needle roller bearing (9) and the other seal (10).
Lubricate bearings and oil seals with the specified grease and insert the inner spacer (13).
Removing and overhauling the shock absorber linkage
Remove the caps (20).
Unscrew and remove the upper (11) and lower (17) screw.
Remove the complete linkage (19).
The linkage (19) consists of a central rod (2), two nuts (6) and (4) and two ball joints (5) and (3). The ball joints have two bushes (7) at the pivot point holes.
Check ball joint play by turning the inner ring by hand after removing the bushes. Replace the ball joint in case of excessive play.
At reassembly, ensure that the nut (4) with left-hand threading (marked with A) is fitted where marked with (A) onto the centre rod (2).
Distance between centres of the ball joints must be 255 mm.
When this distance is changed, motorcycle track alignment will be affected.
Tighten the nuts (4) and (6) on the central rod to the specified torque (Sect. C 3, Frame torque settings).
Refitting the rear suspension
Grease shank and thread of the screw (14) and the underside of the nut (15) with the specified grease.
Insert the complete rocker arm between the frame supports, as shown in the figure.
Push the screw (14) fully home into the frame.
Fit the spacer (16) and the nut (15).
Lock out nut rotation and tighten the screw to the specified torque (Sect. C 3, Frame torque settings).
Grease the thread and underhead of the upper retaining screws (12) and (11) of shock absorber and linkage. Start the screws into their holes in the rocker arm.
Position the shock absorber (1) with the expansion tank up, pointing to the left side of the frame.
Insert the upper ball joint of the shock absorber into the rear hole of the rocker arm.
Tighten the screw (12) to the specified torque (Sect. C 3, Frame torque settings).
Fit the bushes (7) onto the linkage joints.
Insert the upper end of the linkage into the rocker arm and tighten the screw (11) to the specified torque (Sect. C 3, Frame torque settings).
Insert the lower end of the shock absorber (1) and the linkage (19) into the swingarm.
Grease the sliding surface of the threaded bush (18) and fit it into the support of the swingarm.
Grease thread, underhead and sliding surface of the lower retaining screw (17) and fit the screw into the swingarm from the right side.
Tighten the bolt (17) to the specified torque (Sect. C 3, Frame torque settings).
Refit the plugs (20) in the swingarm holes.
